Judging by the dress – and facial hair of the gents at the back – this wonderful photo of a Waltham boys band must have taken around 1890.

There’s some marvellous expressions on the faces of the boys – all having been told to look in a particular direction and hold still for the long exposure times needed in those days.

The doorway in the background looks very impressive. Does anyone recognise it?

They’re all wearing the same uniform. I wonder whether they could be from a religious group such as the Methodist Chapel or Salvation Army.
