View from the spire

This very grainy photograph of the crossroads, taken from the church spire, appeared on ebay, but unfortunately we weren’t able to purchase it. So this is the best quality copy we have – taken from the ebay listing. It’s difficult to date, but it must be the early 1900s. (Click on the image to expand it.)

I’ve searched through the many photos taken from the spire during the 2008/9 repair work to try and find one that matches the angle and view. The two thumbnail photos on the right are the closest I could find. Click on any either image to enlarge them to full view. (Scroll over the sides of the large, pop-up window and there are arrows enabling you to move easily from one photo to another.)

It’s interesting to see what has changed. The most obvious differences are the felling of the large tree opposite the Horseshoes, and the demolition of the three-storey corn mill on the crossroads. But you can also see that a building attached to the Methodist Chapel (on right) has now vanished.
