Remembering the fallen

A total of 12 men from Waltham Parish are commemorated on the World War I and II Memorials in both the Church and Chapel. We want to put faces and stories to these brave, village men who gave their lives for our liberty.

I’ve just posted information on the first soldier – James (Jim) Fairbrother. His nephew, Alec, is a well-known face in the village, having been born and bred here. Alec and his wife, Maureen, can often be seen in one of their three, immaculately-restored Austin Sevens.

They kindly let me scan a photo of Jim, and added some detail to what little we know of him. 17-years-old Jim was one of 833 sailors who drowned in the cold waters of Scapa Flow – just six weeks into WWII.
