Waltham ran-tanning

Waltham ran-tanning

Our thanks to Richard Snodin for transcribing Betsy Kellam’s memories of life in Waltham. Born in 1913, Betsy was the 11th of her parents’ 12 children to be born in one of the small houses known as Rose Cottages (opposite today’s Post Office). We’ve split the story over two pages, starting here.

In part 2, Betsy mentions the last ran-tanning ceremony held in Waltham – to show the village’s disapproval at some extra-marital hank-panky!
