Repair and restoration

The damaged spire

It took over a year to completely repair the considerable damage to the church spire caused by the earthquake in February 2008. The work was well-documented on the SaveOurSpire.org.uk website, including a series of photo slideshows and a 360 degree panorama from near the top of the steeple.

YouTube clips

We also posted four video clips on YouTube of the work as it progressed – much of it taken by the scaffolders. Click below to see the final YouTube episode as the newly re-guilded weather cock was placed back on its perch at the top of the spire, and captured for posterity by local TV.

We also have two photographs of damage caused back in January 1976 when high winds blew down one of the four stone pinnacles surrounding the tower, sending it crashing through the church roof : photo 1 : photo 2.
