The credit at the bottom of the map reads: ‘London Published May 14th 1831 by T.L. Murray, 19, Adam Street Adelpha’ (click to view). There are many similar original maps by Murray for sale on the Internet, all taken from his ‘Atlas of the English Counties’.

There are similarities with the map of 1801 – such as the spelling of Croxton Kyriell, as well as the inclusion of Bescaby. But the key (click on the image below right to view) is also interesting, with its reference to turnpike and mail roads, as well as gentlemen’s seats and members returned to parliament.

The key also includes navigable canals. The Oakham to Melton Canal is shown, but this only survived until 1845 when it was sold to the Midland Railway. They closed it just two years later, intending to use the bed for the construction of the Melton to Oakham line. From this time on, it would be railways that featured on county maps.

Murray's map of Leicestershire, 1831.

One of the last maps to show canals rather than railways.
