Waltham 1787

This 1787 map is interesting as it seems to show the main road from Melton to Grantham going via Waltham along Bescaby Lane – and not the present A607 route through Croxton Kerrial. (Click here to view close-up detail.)

The maker is named as John Cary (click here to view detail), and a line at the bottom of the map reads: London: Published as the Act directs 1st 1787 by J. Cary, Engraver, Map & Printseller, No. 188 the corner of Arundel Street Strand.

  1. I wonder if anyone else has noticed that the map of 1830 spells the names of 5 villages thus: Strathern, Croxton Kyriell, Long Claxton, Knnpton, and Sisonby; but, 43 years earlier, this map of 1787 spells them as we spell them today.
I would expect the reverse to be the case – strange!
