Agricultural Hall

Many thanks to John Hurton for sending this intriguing illustration of the Agricultural Hall – which once stood just past the Methodist Chapel on the road to Grantham (where the fair is held today).

In his email, John writes: “The Agricultural Hall was built in 1838 and demolished in 1862. Stone from the Hall was used in the construction of two of the Duke of Rutland’s farms in Waltham – Hall Farm opposite the site, and The Mount at the top of High Street.”

Click here to read a newspaper report about the formation of the Waltham Agricultural Association, and their construction of the hall. The Association was the first in the county to promote an annual show – under the patronage of the Duke of Rutland.

Note: Richard Snodin thinks that one of the windows from the Hall may be embedded in the cellars of The Mount. (Click here to view.)
